Personal Branding
We have discussed the concept of personal branding throughout our course, showing yourself a certain way in order to obtain a job. There are many aspects that can come into play while working on your personal brand. With technology being such a huge aspect of todays society, your personal life can most likely blend with your professional life. For example, your social media pages can be accessed by almost ever employer trying to hire you. Does this mean we must brand each social media page of ours to be a certain way? Are we constantly editing ourselves to how we WANT to be perceived as opposed to who we really are? Does this mean we are essential promoting fake versions of ourselves in order to get ahead in our jobs? If we brand ourselves a certain way will we get a job we aren't necessarily qualified for just because f how we perceive ourselves to the world?
As a contemporary example we can easily associated President Donald Trump as a fitting example in a certain way. How can a business man be qualified to be the president of the United States of America? Due to the fact that he could have personally branded himself as someone who can help the United States, voters fell for this and gave him the votes he wanted. Due to something like personal branding, goals like this are obtainable. With this being said, is this a good thing? Must we always trust what people are branding themselves as? Or is it all just a facade?

I think that to a certain extent, personal branding can definitely be a facade in modern times, especially with the new value of ones online personal branding presence, such as LinkedIn. It becomes very easy to exaggerate ones accomplishments and experiences on platforms like LinkedIn, and it ultimately blurs the actual value of each candidate, as employers may never know what is real and what isn't. On the other hand, the value of having a strong personal brand can have an enormous impact. I liked your example of Donald Trump, as he branded himself as a man who could solve some massive economic problems in the US, and he obviously appealed to a lot of people who were unhappy with the current state of the country, and thus his brand was enough for him to win the Presidency. So in a way, it's kind of a two-sided coin, because on the one hand, personal brands can be flawed and exaggerated, but on the other hand, if done properly, they can be highly effective. This was a great read, nice work!
ReplyDeletePersonal brands, from my point of view, are not facades or misrepresentations, but merely idealized reflections of one's life and personality. The same way a museum does not throw together a mismatched bunch of artworks in random order, our online presence is curated in much the same way. When done correctly, the point is not to misrepresent, but to arrange information in a way that provides a coherent picture of certain aspects of our lives, deemed to be the most favorable. This, I believe is the best way to produce a personal brand that is maintainable and genuine.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post, it definitely has me thinking about the concept of personal branding and how it can be very misleading.
ReplyDeleteI believe Donald Trump is an excellent example of someone who has perfectly mastered the art of
personal branding. He has successfully connected his names with his business, goals and passions. However as we have discussed, personal brand is not just for politicians. Personal brand is so vitally important in the climate of todays digital world. I do believe personal branding can be a bit of a facade and this is something that we should all keep in mind when viewing a presence on social media. However when it comes to employment, it is up to the potential employers to spot this misrepresentation. That being said, I have found personal branding to be a good thing, as it allows you to match your brand with a company that values and cherishes the qualities you have to bring to the table.
It is interesting you used the example of Donald Trump as I did't think about him in association with personal branding, but it makes for a really good argument. I think personal branding is important but I have a hard time thinking that it is authentic, but I feel like Donald Trumps brand is that he is the most authentic person out there. People in his position would never getting into a full blown argument on a social media platform with another person or group, but he does because he is "just being himself". He has branded himself as powerful, for the people and also truly authentic and real.
ReplyDeletePersonal branding can be seen as only showing your best self, bur Donald Trump has found a way to be his worst self, but still an appealing brand to some people.
