Changes in the Interviewing Process

Hi Everyone,

Since most, if not all, of us are graduating and will be looking for full-time jobs, I thought it might be helpful to give some insight into how the job interview process in general has changed, so that we can be more prepared for them in the future. Spark Hire provides a useful comparison of then vs. now, helping to show the kinds of things that we should take into consideration for interviews. There are 9 changes in particular that are mentioned:
  1. Your reach is much more expansive
  2. Drastic improvements in video interviewing technology
  3. It’s much easier to schedule interviews
  4. An increased focus on cultural fit
  5. Candidates run the show
  6. There’s a greater emphasis on employer branding
  7. Networking happens in many different places
  8. The kind of employee hiring managers want has changed
  9. There’s a greater focus on data and analytics
The two that I feel connect the most to what we have discussed in this course are number 6 (there’s a greater emphasis on employer branding), number 7 (networking happens in many different places).

We discussed the importance of establishing our own brand and aligning ourselves with the brand of a company that we feel we would fit best with. It is important moving forward that we pay attention to the kinds of companies that we could potentially work for and make sure that our brand would work well with the brand of the company. It is also important to think about the kind of brand that you want to establish for yourself, and that it best reflects who you are as a person, what your interests are, and ultimately what skills you have and what you are capable of.

In regard to networking, we have acknowledged the importance of social media and online platforms such as LinkedIn, but also highlighted the importance of face-to-face interactions for the purpose of establishing more personal connections. I think it is important that we take advantage of all of the opportunities to network that we get and use every connection as effectively as possible to make sure that we can be as successful as possible. Don’t be afraid to reach out to somebody because that could be the connection that helps you in the future.

Take a look at this list and let me know what you think!

-       Are there any others that you feel reflect what we have learned in this course?
-       Are there any key changes that you feel are missing from this list?

Thanks for reading, and good luck with everything J
