Are creative cities the ONLY place to be?
We have heard throughout this course about the "Creative Age." With all of us being communications majors, and most of us being 'creatives' is this our time to shine professionally? And if so how can we truly harness this creative potential everyone is talking about?
One of the ways in which we are suggested to harness this creative potential is to thrive within a 'creative city'. Creative clusters are all across Ontario and are made up of cities that offer creativity oriented jobs. Does this mean we must travel to these cities in order to be supported career-wise? I am starting to think so... and I am wondering what you all think, being in the same position as I am as an upcoming Laurier alumni.
As I look for jobs I am starting to see a trend that these so called 'creative cities' like Toronto, Kitchener, Ottawa etc are for the most part, the only cities offering me the jobs I strive for. So what does this mean? Do we all have to either spend all of our hard earned cash on commuting or perhaps move to these creative cities in order to thrive? Is this part of harnessing the creative potential of Ontario? It is clear that more opportunities lie within these creative cities but will this mean that these cities will be in such high demand that these places will become over populated with creatives?
With all of these creative opportunities being offered it seems like the opportunities are still limited to us. What does everyone think?

Hey there! It certainly does seem like it, doesn't it? But I don't think that creative cities are the only places that offer the types of jobs we're looking for.
ReplyDeleteFor example, I have a good friend that works as a software developer for a major social media company, but he works remotely. He currently does all of his work sitting in a cafe in Colombia, where he lives for the time being. He's part of a movement of people that call themselves "digital nomads" and travel extensively, often only staying in one place for 3 or 4 months. A lot of these jobs are in creatively-oriented fields.
