Women in the Tech Industry
Recently when browsing through my LinkedIn feed, I came across an article titled "9 of the World's Most Influential Female Entrepreneurs." I was immediately compelled to read the article however came to realize that it was an info graph and didn't answer as many of the questions that I was hoping it would, especially in regards to this course. Throughout CS400Y, we have heavily discussed the idea of risk and reward. When reading this article, it is logical to assume that these nine women exercised the ideas of risk and reward that we have discussed in class however the extent of this was not discussed.
Do you believe that, especially being a woman in the tech industry, it is worth it to take big risks when there could be such big consequences or do you think the possibility of reward is worth it?

Thanks for addressing this topic. After two consecutive summers working in a tech start-up and under the employment of two female bosses, I can confidently say that people underestimate women in power. It seemed as though the women in the office had to make their value known in a way that the men did not. Once a record of good performance has been established, taking big risks is always worth it. Aim high and prove all the naysayers wrong. No one can criticize hard work, success, and determination.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very interesting blog post with regards to the course content. I would have to agree with Jace's comments, as I believe that women in power are constantly underestimated and under appreciated. Personally, I would always encourage risk taking in the workplace, as it yields the highest reward and thus offers greater opportunity to businesses. All of the worlds greatest entrepreneurs are noted risk takers, and while failure is always possible when taking large risks, the rewards can be enormous and incredibly worthwhile.
ReplyDeleteThere isn't much that I can say that isn't in line with what Adam and Jace have already mentioned. As women in the tech industry, I do believe that it is important for us to take bit risks, perhaps more so than men. This is because, not only are we faced with greater challenges because of systematic sexism that still exists in tech industries, but also because what can be considered "risky" for us is different for the same reasons.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, women who make it in the tech industry serve as a beacon to other women in the field and fight the ideas of those who would seek to exclude them. They set an example and pave the way for future generations.
Hey Sarah, thanks for the post!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with my fellow classmates on this one. Due to the subordinate nature women are often subjected to in North America, I believe it is incredibly important for women in the tech sector to be active participants in the work place. An effective and efficient method for them to do so is by taking positive, calculated risks. There will always be the element of uncertainly associated with risk however, the benefits frequently outweigh the cons, as risk often opens the door to new possibilities. I found this awesome article by the The Huffington Post that further explains the added benefits for women who take risks in the work place. These benefits can be as simple as learning, as a small example. If you get the chance please check it out!
