What your LinkedIn Profile Should Look Like in 2018
We have tirelessly discussed the implications of job-hunting on LinkedIn and the reasons why we must consider ourselves as something to be sold to our potential employers. Let’s stop discussing WHY and start discussing HOW!
As with any social media/networking platform, it is important to stay relevant and adapt to the changing nature of the technology. Here is a detailed list of what to include and omit from your profile as you enter the workforce in 2018:
1. It is a SOCIAL network, be social! Interact with colleagues, industry experts, companies you admire, etc. Your list of connections isn’t enough to justify your level of connectivity. Actively engage with things and people that interest you. You will thank yourself later.
2. Add a summary of who are you and what you want to do. This is the elevator pitch that will help to differentiate you from the competition. Make sure this statement includes your interests and motivations, not just what type of job you are looking for.
Think about starting with something like this: I am passionate about bringing a better online experience to brands that empowers them to….
3. Always. Be. Updating. Unlike a resume, your LinkedIn profile is also your portfolio of work completed. You need to remain relevant and post content that is engaging. Be an industry leader and have people look to YOUR profile for the most relevant content.

I LOVED this post! I thought it to be very fun and informative, so thank you.
ReplyDeleteI really agreed with the points you said, and they gave me some things to think about in terms of my own profile. With this being said, its a lot of work to maintain your profile, especially with point #3 in mind, always. be. updating. Its a very true statement nonetheless, people like to see fresh new information on your LinkedIn and we have to keep ourselves relevant but is that ever hard work.
I also really enjoyed the first point of being social. It is a form of Social media and the whole points to make connections with others, I think this to be daunting to some and the 'social' aspect gets lost.
Thank you for giving everyone some tips and tricks that could get lost in the chaos of LinkedIn, great post!
Thank you so much for this. I'm still new to LinkedIn and have only recently started to grow my network so these tips will no doubt be helpful.
ReplyDeleteFor the longest time I just thought that it was basically just an online resume, but having gotten more involved with it over the course of the semester I've been enjoying the social aspects of it. I find LinkedIn to be quite and interesting platform, and I very much agree with your point likening it to social other social networks.
Thanks for your post, I found it to be incredibly insightful! I too, am fairly new to the world of LinkedIn and I personally experienced some trouble learning the etiquette such as the do’s & don’ts of this site, so I will be sure to use some of these tips!
ReplyDeleteI found the last tip really resonated with me, from conversing with my colleges I have found that a lot of people fall into a trap and fail to update their profile. It is very important to make sure your profile is updated and complete, not only does this make it easier for potential employers to find you, it also indicates that you are a person who takes full advantage of all opportunities in order to present yourself as an expert in your chosen field. As humans, we are constantly changing and bettering ourselves. It is important to add new skills or projects you have been working on or acquired. This will inform viewers what your personal strengths are. This is an incredibly fast and simple method to convey your areas of expertise to prospects.
