Pros and Cons of Social Networking Online

The class discussions from the presentations today have lingered with me as I have been thinking about the pros and cons of creating our personal brands and networks on social media platforms such as LinkedIn. As mentioned in class, we have moved away from the traditional way of taking our time to hand over physical resumes to employers and towards a modern-technological way of promoting ourselves online. With this in mind, I searched ‘new networking online’ and came across this article by Monster. On a personal note, I have used Monster as a source for job listings and therefore thought that this article was very interesting as it provided advice for social networking.

When reading the article, Monster has outlined that although we have mastered the ‘art of handing out business cards’, social networking online is another way to make connections for business, dating or personal interests. Considering the seven tips in this article; Choose Your Flavor, Understand Site Culture and Rules, Hone Your Profile, Don’t Be Pushy, Do What You Say You Will, Prepare for Face-to-Face Introductions, Help Yourself by Helping Others, which ones do you think are important to keep in mind when social networking? Are there tips that you disagree with? Do you think job posting sites such as Monster is a reliable and effective way to find a job? Should we still stick to handing out business cards while creating connections online?

  1. Very interesting post and article, this gave me a lot to think about.
I think all of those 7 tips by Monster are important. I really think that "Do what you say you will" is the most important. There is nothing, I think that is more important to an employer than an employee who keeps their word and is reliable. I think that it is extremely crucial for a company to be able to lean on their employees and trust them in this way, to know that an employee can follow through on a task without fail is vital for high performance. If you say you can do something you should always be prepared to follow through in order to prove you are reliable to a company. I disagree in a sense to the "prepare for face-to-face introductions. I think this should be a no-brainer that should not even be included. This is a "tip" that everyone should just know and e prepared for, I don't think its necessarily a "tip", I think its necessary.

  2. It seems to me that as we move towards more digital forms of communication, networking in a business sense should follow suit. However, online platforms are just another tool at your disposal when it comes to finding employment.

Out of the seven tips, the most striking to me is "Help Yourself by Helping Others," as I believe that what people remember most are the things you make them feel, and by showing others kindness you make the best impression and form the strongest bond.
