LinkedIn Summary

The presentations today about the Gershon chapters remind me about the importance of LinkedIn and the growth of one's network. I wanted to use this post to encourage my classmates to log in and update your information or complete your profile to achieve that All-Star status.  In order to do so, it is required that you create a summary to the top of your profile. Writing these can be difficult, so to jumpstart your profile development, check out this link on how to write an effective summary as a student!

  1. Hi Kristina,

Thank you so much for sharing this. With graduation approaching, this is becoming even more relevant and important as I enter the workforce. Assuming you have implemented methods on your own profile, have you received any feedback from the changes you made?

  2. Thanks for sharing, Kristina!

As I mentioned in class today, I volunteer at the Career Centre. Many students aren't aware that the handouts and slides provided during the Career Centre's workshops (which I definitely recommend) are available to everyone on Navigator's dashboard under 'Career Centre Handouts and Workshop Slides'. There is a workshop geared toward building a LinkedIn profile, but if you aren't able to attend a workshop, Navigator is still a great resource!

If you've attended a workshop and checked out the slides online, but still have questions or would simply like feedback on your profile, you can book a 45-minute appointment with a Career Consultant. Drop-in hours are also available for this appointment option and others Monday-Friday from 1-4 p.m.

Career Centre services are unique to other universities in that they are available to all Laurier students AND alumni, so you can access services after you graduate for free! If anyone has any questions about Career Centre services, such as upcoming events, GSES, or resume critiques, I'd be happy to help!

  3. Hey Kristina, I enjoy the approach you took on your post!

I agree with you that LinkedIn is a robust platform for both personal growth, networking, and job hunting. Especially with graduation approaching soon, I believe we should all take the time to either update our profiles or make one. Lately, I have been adding to mine and connecting with classmates from my hometown and previous university years. I visited the Career Centre last year where they helped me create a professional resume, and also aid me in building my LinkedIn profile. The career centre was extremely beneficial- they told me what employers look for such as key terms, aesthetics, and what to avoid putting on your resume. I urge everyone to check out the career centre before school ends on April 4th to ensure their resume is up to standards and that their LinkedIn profile is up to date!

  4. Hey Kristina, thank you for posting this, as it is highly relevant to all graduating students who are soon to enter the workforce. I find that LinkedIn has become slightly over-saturated of late, as it seems like everyone has an account these days and thus becomes an option for employers. With that said, it becomes very important to make your profile standout as much as possible. It is no longer enough to just have a LinkedIn account, but yours must be incredibly attractive to employers. So for that reason, I agree that adding a summary to your profile will aid in improving ones profile. Has this addition yielded any positive results to your own profile Kristina?

  5. Hi Kristina,

Thank you for sharing this! In other classes where we have talked about LinkedIn profiles, I have always been confused about how to write a good summary because Communication Studies is so broad and your skills could lie in so many areas. It is hard to narrow down who you are, what you do, and what you want to achieve in the future all in one paragraph. This article has definitely answered some of these questions. The Communication Studies Club paired up with the learning centre last semester and put on a seminar about how to properly organize your LinkedIn profile. I have only used the career centre once before in the past, but I felt like they gave really good advice that only complements the article that you gave posted here. I would recommend to anyone to go to the career centre to seek additional help on how to create the most effective LinkedIn Profile.
